School History

Patterson Literature Magnet School is in southeast Houston serving the community of Meadowcreek Village and the surrounding areas since 1958. Meadowcreek Village is one of Houston’s first planned communities and its surrounding areas have a population of 22,929. The ethnicity of the neighborhood is 74% Hispanic, 21% White, 3% African American, 1% Asian and 1% Other. The Meadowcreek Village Civic Club is responsible for many services and improvements to the neighborhood. 

Patterson has strong parental involvement that is represented by PTO. Patterson currently has an instructional staff of sixty-two, the ethnicity of which is 34% White, 44% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 8% African American and 2% Native American. The percent of the teachers at Patterson that are highly qualified in the core academic areas is 100%. The current profile for teachers by program is 49% Regular, 23% Bilingual, Dual Language 46%, 23% Gifted and Talented, and 5% Special Education. Patterson Literature Magnet School currently serves 945 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 5. The majority of Patterson’s current population is 94.1% Hispanic, followed by 2.0% White, 3.0 % African American, 0.6% Asian, and 0.1% Native American. The retention rate is 4% and the student mobility rate is 13.2%. The attendance rate is 97.6%. Of the 945 students at Patterson, 22% are attending on an address exception. Patterson’s students qualify for school-wide Title I services. The free/reduced lunch program serves 87% of the students. The Special Education population of 4.0% receives speech, resource and life skills services. The at-risk students comprise 66.5 % of the student enrollment. In addition, Patterson’s bilingual/English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional program serves the Limited English Proficiency (LEP) student population of 37.6%. Patterson Dual Language Program serves 46% of the students from PK through third grade. The percentage of students served in Gifted and Talented Education is 11.0 %. Patterson Literature Magnet School received the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Accountability rating of “Exemplary” for the 2009-2010 school year. The goal of the faculty and staff of Patterson is to become an exemplary school where learning is measured by the progress rate of each student from year-to-year. Patterson Literature Magnet School is a learning community of teachers, students and parents who share the vision that produces a college/career bound generation of student who are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The mission of Patterson Literature Magnet School is to provide a safe environment where all students receive a rigorous, differentiated instruction so that they can perform above the mastery level in each content area and develop into productive citizens.
